Chevelon Canyon Lake, reservoir in Coconino County, Arrizona
Chevelon Canyon Lake is a reservoir in Coconino County, Arizona, nestled in a deep canyon surrounded by dense forest and covering about 206 acres with an average depth of 35 feet. The water is fed by Chevelon Creek and supports populations of rainbow and brown trout that reproduce naturally.
The reservoir was constructed in 1965 with government support to provide water storage in this forested region. Its creation has provided anglers and outdoor enthusiasts with access to this remote location.
Access requires a steep hike of about three-quarters of a mile from the parking area to the lake, suitable only for hikers in good physical condition. Bring ample water and food supplies since no stores are nearby, and check road conditions with the Forest Service beforehand as winter weather frequently closes access.
Boats can be brought in, but only oars, paddles, or electric motors of 10 horsepower or less are permitted, prompting many visitors to use lightweight float-tubes instead of heavy boats. Live bait is prohibited, so anglers must use only lures and flies, making trout fishing here more technically demanding than at other locations.
