Fort Severn First Nation, First Nation band and locality in northern Ontario, Canada.

Fort Severn is a First Nation band located along the Severn River in far northern Ontario near Hudson Bay. The settlement sits in a subarctic landscape where forest and open water shape the environment.

The site began as a fur trading post in 1689, part of the early English presence in northern North America. The community adopted its current name and gained formal reserve status in 1980.

The residents speak Western Swampy Cree and maintain traditions rooted in their relationship with the river and surrounding land. You can see this connection reflected in how people spend time outdoors and in the importance of hunting and fishing traditions.

Getting there requires flights or winter roads, as the location is remote with few other transport options. Plan your visit around weather conditions and flight schedules, which are essential to reaching the community.

The community relocated to its current location in 1973 to access shipping routes more easily. This planned move was unusual and allowed residents to strengthen their connection with outside trade and supplies.
