Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Archaeological national monument in Montezuma County, United States.
Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is a large protected area in southwestern Colorado with thousands of archaeological sites scattered across desert canyons. The terrain includes steep canyons, plateaus, and dry landscapes where ancient stone pueblos and individual structures have been preserved.
The area was home to Ancestral Puebloans between 500 and 1300 CE, who developed sophisticated settlements and irrigation systems. The population left the region later, but their archaeological remains survive as evidence of their skills.
The sites here tell the story of Ancestral Puebloans who lived in the canyons for hundreds of years, leaving behind stone dwellings and ritual chambers. Visitors can see these remains today and understand how these peoples organized their communities.
Visitors find marked hiking trails through the canyons and can explore many sites on foot, though some are difficult to reach. The terrain is mostly open, so proper preparation with plenty of water and sturdy footwear is important.
The site contains an extraordinary concentration of thousands of preserved structures found nowhere else in such density. This collection offers a rare window into the development and daily life of a large pre-Columbian population.
