Lac Bleu, Mountain lake in Val d'Herens, Switzerland
Lac Bleu is a mountain lake situated at 2090 meters elevation in Val d'Herens within the Valais region. The water displays an intense blue color and sits surrounded by dense larch forests and rocky mountain slopes.
The lake formed through glacial movements during the last ice age, when ice carved a depression into the mountain landscape. These geological processes shaped the basin thousands of years ago.
Local mountain guides regularly lead groups to the lake while sharing knowledge about Alpine flora, geology, and traditional Valaisan mountain life.
A marked trail from La Gouille guides visitors to the lake in about 45 minutes of walking. The mountain restaurant Chez Leon provides food and drinks along the route.
The water is fed by a spring located 10 meters above the lake that contains specific algae and glacial clay minerals. This mineral composition creates the distinctive blue color of the water.
