Paxmal, Peace monument in Walenstadt, Switzerland
The Paxmal is a peace monument in Walenstadt featuring two substantial walls set against the Churfirsten mountain backdrop. The structure combines sculptural elements and architectural forms in an open space designed for visitors to walk through.
The monument was created by Swiss artist Karl Bickel, who recovered from tuberculosis at this location. Its construction spanned multiple decades and became the defining work of his life.
The left side displays couples and daily human interactions, while the right side shows figures representing inner growth and spiritual awakening. Walking through the monument, you feel how these two parts speak to different dimensions of being human.
The site is accessible from spring through autumn with parking available for visitors. The grounds are easy to navigate on foot and offer free access without barriers.
Bickel hand-crafted the entire work over several decades, processing both physical materials and his personal thoughts about human existence. This prolonged, hands-on creative process reflects a single artist's deep commitment to one vision.
