Luftseilbahn Iltios–Chäserrugg, Aerial cableway in Unterwasser, Switzerland.
The Luftseilbahn Iltios-Chäserrugg is a reversible aerial cable car that carries passengers from the lower station at 1339 meters to the upper station at Chäserrugg peak at 2262 meters. It functions as the upper section of an access system, completing the ascent from the valley to the mountain summit and opening up the high alpine area for visitors.
The cableway was developed in the early 1970s as an extension to the existing Iltiosbahn funicular and began operations in 1972. It was part of Toggenburg's growth into a modern mountain tourism destination with updated access systems.
The cableway serves as a vital link in the Toggenburg winter sports infrastructure, bringing visitors to ski runs, hiking paths, and mountain inns throughout the region.
The cableway operates mainly during winter months when neighboring ski slopes are open and works best for visitors who want to reach the higher alpine areas. Proper mountain gear and weather-resistant clothing are recommended, as conditions at the top are significantly colder and windier than in the valley below.
The system creates a continuous ascent from Unterwasser valley to the Chäserrugg peak, gaining over 1000 meters in elevation through multiple stages. This multi-stage setup allows visitors to explore the mountain gradually instead of attempting a single steep climb.
