Guangsheng Temple, Buddhist temple at Mount Huoshan in Hongtong County, China
Guangsheng Temple is a Buddhist temple complex on Mount Huoshan that spreads across the mountainside in separate sections. It comprises an upper temple, a lower temple, and a Water God Temple positioned at different elevations along the slopes.
The temple was originally founded during the Eastern Han Dynasty under the name Julushe Temple before being renamed during the Tang Dynasty. This renaming marked a significant transition in its religious and cultural importance.
The lower temple displays murals from the Yuan Dynasty that show how theater and performance were central to life back then. These paintings give visitors a window into classical Chinese artistic traditions of that era.
The temple is most easily reached by bus from Hongtong County with regular service connections available. Wear sturdy footwear for your visit since the pathways between the different temple sections involve climbing and can be steep in places.
Within the complex stands a distinctive tower made of colored glazed tiles that rises thirteen stories tall and features Buddha carvings on its exterior. This tower is notable for its intricate tilework and craftsmanship.
