Guoqing Temple, Buddhist temple in Tiantai Mountains, China
The temple complex spans 73,000 square meters with over 600 ancient buildings arranged in ascending layers along the mountainside and beside a stream.
Founded in 598 CE during the Sui Dynasty, Guoqing Temple received its name from the phrase meaning when the temple is complete, the nation will be at peace.
The temple served as the founding location of Chinese Tiantai Buddhism and influenced Japanese Buddhism through Master Saicho, who studied there before establishing Tendai Buddhism.
The Main Hall contains a 6.8-meter-tall bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni weighing 13.5 tons, which was transferred from Beijing's Forbidden City in 1973.
The temple preserves a plum tree planted during the Sui Dynasty, making it one of the oldest plum trees in China at over 1,300 years old.
