Jiufotang Formation, Geological formation in Chaoyang, China.
The Jiufotang Formation is a geological structure in Liaoning Province made up of layers of mudstone and sandstone. These layers contain thousands of fossils from the Early Cretaceous period that are preserved in exceptional condition.
The formation was first documented in the 1920s and then studied systematically by researchers over many decades. Scientists have used modern dating methods to determine that the rock layers date to the Early Cretaceous, around 125 million years ago.
The site draws paleontologists and researchers who come to study the fossils embedded in the rock layers. This work has made the formation important for understanding how ancient life developed and changed over time.
Access to this site may be limited because scientific excavations and research work are ongoing there. It is best to contact local authorities or research institutions in advance to learn about visiting conditions and what is currently accessible.
Many fossils in this formation show exceptionally well-preserved feathers and other body details of prehistoric creatures. Such detailed preservation is rare and helps scientists understand what extinct animals looked like and how they lived.
