Gunnison Tunnel

The Gunnison Tunnel is a water tunnel that stretches about 5.8 miles through Vernal Mesa, carrying water from the Gunnison River to the Uncompahgre Valley. It has a rectangular cross-section of about 11 by 12 feet with an arched roof and forms the core component of a larger irrigation system for agricultural development.

The tunnel was completed in 1909 using advanced techniques like compressed air hammers and dynamite, replacing earlier methods. Its opening marked a turning point for regional development and demonstrated what modern engineering could achieve in difficult terrain.
