Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, Nature reserve in Montrose County, United States.
Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area is a nature reserve featuring black granite canyons, red sandstone formations, and hills covered with pinon and juniper trees. The landscape includes deep gorges, open badlands, and forested ridges that create varied terrain throughout the region.
Congress established the area as a protected conservation zone in 1999 to safeguard its natural features and resources. This designation also created an officially designated wilderness area within the larger protected landscape.
Rock art created by Native Americans covers canyon walls throughout the area, telling stories of people who lived here long ago. These ancient markings remain visible today as you walk through the landscape.
Access is mainly from Falcon Road, where several hiking trails lead down to the Gunnison River. Designated camping areas in different sections allow you to stay overnight and explore at your own pace.
The Gunnison River flows through a double canyon system of black granite and red sandstone, creating excellent fly-fishing waters with healthy trout populations. This unusual rock formation also generates exciting whitewater rapids that attract adventure seekers.
