The Ojo Caliente Hot Springs Round Barn is an adobe structure with a double-pitch roof and a hexagonal cupola at its peak. The building sits on a concrete foundation and features a circular floor plan that sets it apart from typical barn designs.
Anthony F. Joseph built the barn in 1924 to meet growing demand for dairy products from the nearby mineral resort. The building was constructed when visitor numbers at the resort were rising and more food supplies were needed.
The structure represents a shift in regional farming when small household dairy operations grew into commercial businesses. It shows how the economy around the nearby mineral resort changed and demanded new types of buildings.
The barn sits near U.S. Route 285 and can be seen from the road. The structure underwent restoration in 2002 and is accessible from the outside, though visitors may not always be able to enter the interior.
This is the only adobe round barn built in the United States, combining traditional clay brick with a rare circular design. The pairing of these two features makes it a distinctive creation in the country's agricultural building history.
