Tesuque, Native American pueblo in Santa Fe County, United States
Tesuque is a Tewa pueblo located in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains in Santa Fe County. The settlement spans approximately 17,000 acres with rolling terrain and natural water sources that support the community.
The Tewa-speaking community established their settlement around 1200 AD in this location. They maintained continuous habitation through centuries despite external pressures and changing circumstances in the region.
Residents create handcrafted pottery, paintings, textiles, and silverwork that reflect their artistic traditions and community values. You can see these items displayed in homes and at small workshops throughout the settlement.
Contact the Pueblo administration before visiting as the site occasionally closes to the public. Photography is not permitted, so plan accordingly and respect local guidelines during your visit.
The name Tesuque comes from the Tewa language and refers to a village near cottonwood trees in a narrow passage. This naming captures the exact geography of where the settlement sits along a mountain valley passage.
