Pikes Peak International Raceway, Motorsport racing track in Fountain, Colorado, US.
Pikes Peak International Raceway is a motorsport facility in Fountain near Colorado Springs and includes both a one-mile oval circuit and a 1.3-mile (2.1-kilometer) interior road course. The two tracks can be used separately or together depending on the type of event and provide space for different racing formats.
The racing track opened in 1997 on the site of the former Pikes Peak Meadows horse racing course and quickly gained recognition as the fastest one-mile paved oval circuit. Since then the facility has passed through several ownership changes and hosted different racing series.
Local motorsport fans use the facility regularly for club races and gather here during car enthusiast meetings. Drift competitions draw younger drivers and give the place a lively scene beyond traditional oval events.
Visitors find grandstand seating for up to 40000 spectators arranged around the oval and along the interior road course. On race days early arrival is advisable due to limited parking areas near the facility.
The surface of the track sits about 6 feet (1.8 meters) below normal ground level and creates particular conditions for tire choice and aerodynamics. This lowered position also affects wind patterns and makes driving on this oval different from comparable high plains circuits.
