Federal Correctional Complex, Florence, United States federal prison in Colorado
Federal Correctional Complex, Florence is a federal prison facility in Colorado made up of four separate institutions with different security levels: a camp, a medium-security facility, a high-security facility, and ADX, one of the most secure prisons in the country. The complex holds more than 2,300 inmates and operates programs for inmate work and education.
The complex was established as a major federal holding facility and has grown over decades to its current form. Fremont County has a long history of prisons, beginning with the Territorial Prison that opened in 1871, which visitors can still see along with its museum.
The facility is not open to the public and visits are allowed only at specific times under strict rules. The dry and sunny Colorado climate requires appropriate preparation when visiting or passing through the area.
ADX, known as Supermax, is considered the most secure prison in the country and holds inmates deemed the highest security threats. Its design and security systems are engineered specifically to prevent any possibility of escape.
