Timpanogos Glacier

Timpanogos Glacier is a rock glacier located in a north-facing cirque on Mount Timpanogos at approximately 11,749 feet in elevation. The formation comprises three distinct flow lobes, each displaying separate patterns of movement.

Prior to the 1930s drought, the glacier displayed visible crevasses before transitioning into its current rock glacier form. This transformation marks a significant shift in its physical appearance and composition.

The location takes its name from Ute chief Timpanogos, whose legacy remains embedded in the local geography. Mountaineers and nature enthusiasts regard this site as a significant waypoint on their summit attempts.

The location requires specialized climbing skills and appropriate equipment to navigate safely due to its technical terrain. Visitors should arrive with alpine experience and knowledge of local conditions.

In 1994, a crevasse opened in the rocks and revealed ice roughly 40 feet thick, confirming substantial glacial material existed beneath the surface. This discovery showed researchers that the formation contained far more frozen mass than what appeared visible above.
