Crystal Geyser, Cold water geyser near Green River, Utah, United States.
Crystal Geyser is a cold-water geyser on the east bank of the Green River that shoots water and carbon dioxide under high pressure through an abandoned oil well shaft. The phenomenon originates from a pressurized groundwater reservoir located deep below the surface.
The site transformed in 1936 when oil drilling unexpectedly hit a pressurized groundwater system buried far below. This accidental discovery during exploration activities created the geyser phenomenon we see today.
The site draws visitors interested in observing eruption patterns and documenting how the water spray has changed over time. People find it fascinating to witness a natural phenomenon that wasn't part of the original landscape.
The site is reachable by car from Green River by heading about nine miles southeast and following maintained dirt roads to designated parking areas. Plan to arrive early in the day for better viewing conditions and fewer crowds.
The underground reservoir holds trapped carbon dioxide within ancient sandstone layers that powers the eruptions without any geothermal heat. This natural gas source makes it fundamentally different from true geothermal geysers.
