Canyon Lands

Canyon Lands is a physiographic region spanning four states with deep canyons, structural basins, and mountain ranges creating a complex landscape. The terrain features dramatic rock formations and diverse geological structures that vary significantly across different areas.

Indigenous communities established settlements throughout this region over thousands of years, leaving behind numerous archaeological sites. These ancient settlements show a long history of human presence across the landscape.

The region contains the largest concentration of National Park Service units outside Washington D.C., including nine national parks and eighteen national monuments.

Bring plenty of water and reliable navigation tools when exploring, since the terrain varies significantly across multiple states. Conditions change considerably depending on the season and specific location you choose to visit.

The San Rafael Swell displays rock layers from multiple geological periods spanning from the Carboniferous era to the Cretaceous. This exceptional geological exposure reveals layers of Earth's history rarely seen together in one location.
