Monster Tower

Monster Tower is a sandstone formation in the Island in the Sky region of Canyonlands National Park, rising to approximately 1,779 meters (5,837 feet) above sea level. The rock formation stands apart from the surrounding plateau and creates a distinctive landmark visible across the landscape.

The site became part of Canyonlands National Park when it was established in 1964, marking a major shift toward protecting this geological region. This designation helped ensure the preservation of the natural formations found throughout the area.

The area shows evidence of past human settlement, with ancient sites scattered across the landscape. People visiting today can sense the long history of inhabitation through what remains visible on the ground.

The location is remote, so visitors should bring plenty of water, navigation tools, and layers for changing temperatures throughout the day. Conditions can shift quickly, so starting early and monitoring the weather helps ensure a safer visit.

The formation is known among climbers for offering interesting ascent routes with varying difficulty levels. Experienced climbers appreciate the technical challenges and the views from the rock itself.
