East Longs Peak Trail – Longs Peak Trail – Keyhole Route – Shelf Trail

East Longs Peak Trail – Longs Peak Trail – Keyhole Route – Shelf Trail, National Historic hiking trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

This is a historic hiking trail in the Rocky Mountains leading to the summit of Longs Peak at over 14,000 feet (4,270 m). The route winds through forests, alpine meadows, and rocky sections, with the Keyhole portion featuring narrow ledges and steep rock faces.

The route was first built by Reverend Elkanah Lamb in 1878, marking early efforts in mountain recreation. Later improvements and extensions by other pioneers helped establish it as a major hiking destination in the region.

The route attracts hikers from around the world seeking alpine experiences in the Rocky Mountains. The hiking community here shares practical knowledge about high-altitude travel and mountain conditions.

The climb requires preparation for high altitude, changing weather, and technical sections with steep rocks. Sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and experience with mountain hiking are essential for safe travel.

The Keyhole Route demands climbing skills beyond regular hiking, especially on technical sections with exposed rock. Experienced mountaineers and hikers encounter challenging passages that test both nerve and technique here.
