19th Street Bridge, Truss bridge in Denver, United States
The 19th Street Bridge spans the South Platte River using a double iron truss design with cast iron ornamental details running along both sides. The crossing structure measures approximately 63 meters in length and carries pedestrians along the river corridor.
Completed in 1888 by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Company, the structure replaced a wooden predecessor that had been damaged by flood waters. It remains one of Colorado's oldest wrought iron bridges still standing in its original location.
The structure displays the construction techniques typical of the late 1800s, with cast iron decorations along its railings that reflect the design choices of that era. Local residents and visitors recognize these details as examples of how bridges were built and decorated during that period.
The bridge is now reserved exclusively for pedestrian use and connects to walking trails that run along the riverbank. The crossing is relatively brief, making it a natural stopping point within a longer walk along the water.
During summer months, the crossing becomes the venue for an annual gala that transforms it into a celebration space supporting community green space efforts. This event brings a festive dimension to a structure primarily known for its engineering heritage.
