Fort St. Vrain Generating Station, natural gas-fired powerplant
Fort St. Vrain Generating Station is a natural gas-fired power plant in Platteville, Colorado that produces electricity by burning natural gas in multiple turbines. The facility generates approximately 1000 megawatts of power using a combined cycle system that maximizes energy efficiency and reliability.
The power station became operational in 2001 and has run continuously since then. The site previously housed an experimental high-temperature nuclear reactor that operated in the 1970s and 1980s before being decommissioned in 1997.
The site is located in a quiet area with open fields near the Platte River and St. Vrain Creek. Visitors can see the facility from a distance, but access to the grounds is restricted for safety reasons.
The site was once home to one of the few high-temperature nuclear reactors built outside its country of origin. This reactor design demonstrated innovative safety features in commercial operation, though its economic challenges ultimately led to its shutdown and replacement with natural gas generation.
