Shoshone Ice Caves, Ice cave in Lincoln County, United States.
Located 100 feet beneath the surface, the Shoshone Ice Cave extends 1,000 feet in length with ice depths varying between 8 and 30 feet.
The formation resulted from ancient lava flows creating tubes where air currents later caused subterranean water to freeze, maintaining cold temperatures year-round.
The site features a museum displaying Native American artifacts, geological specimens, and a statue of Chief Washakie of the Shoshone Tribe.
Tours operate from May through September, with visitors needing to navigate 160 stairs during the 45-minute guided exploration of the cave.
Despite summer temperatures outside, the cave maintains freezing conditions, creating a natural refrigeration system within the volcanic structure.
