Shoshone Ice Caves, Ice cave in Lincoln County, United States.
Shoshone Ice Caves are located beneath the earth's surface and contain thick ice that persists year-round. The cavern extends for a considerable distance and displays varying depths of ice throughout its passages.
The caves formed from ancient lava flows that created tube-like passages where water later froze due to cold air circulation. This geological development created a natural phenomenon that has survived to the present day.
The attached museum displays artifacts related to the Shoshone people and their connection to this location. These collections show how important this cave has been to the local community.
Visiting requires climbing stairs to descend into the passages and moving through the underground spaces. It is wise to bring warm clothing even if temperatures are warm above ground since the environment underground remains perpetually cold.
While temperatures outside vary greatly the interior remains frozen year-round and functions like a natural cooling system. This ability stems from the volcanic structure that helps trap cold air within the underground spaces.
