Memorial Gymnasium, multi-purpose indoor arena on the campus of the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho
Memorial Gymnasium is a sports arena on the University of Idaho campus built in the Tudor-Gothic style. The brick and concrete structure seats approximately 2,500 people and features a prominent tower on its west side, stained glass windows, and climbing ivy covering parts of the exterior walls.
The building opened in November 1928 as a memorial to Idaho residents who died in World War I. The east end was expanded in the early 1950s to increase capacity and improve facilities for campus activities and sports.
The name Memorial Gymnasium reflects its purpose of honoring Idaho residents who died in World War I. The carved stone figures of football players on the walls show how the building connects sports and remembrance in the daily life of the campus community.
The building is located on an active university campus, and access should be arranged through campus visitor entrances. It is best to walk around the exterior first to observe the architectural details before attempting to view the interior.
The building originally featured bookshelves along its interior walls and served as a library before becoming purely a sports facility. This dual purpose made it a rare combination of academic and athletic space in one structure.
