A trading post appeared here in 1860, and the settlement changed its name in 1866 when a sawmill began operations. The town council received official recognition in March 1885.

More than 160 hectares (400 acres) of parkland can be reached via walking and cycling paths, including a riverside route through the center. Most trails remain open from spring through autumn, while winter months bring snow and cold weather.
A hand-operated wooden carousel with hand-carved animals has been turning here since 1995 inside its own building. Mount Sentinel rises just behind town and shows a large letter M made of white concrete on its slope.
