Florence Hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Missoula County, Montana
The Florence Hotel is a seven-story building in downtown Missoula, Montana, designed in the Art Moderne style and completed in 1941. The structure contains 140 rooms and was originally built to accommodate travelers arriving by train or car.
The original Florence Hotel was built in 1888 but burned down in 1913 and was replaced by a larger structure with over 100 rooms. After a second fire in 1936, the community decided to construct a more permanent building, resulting in the current structure completed in 1941.
The Florence Hotel takes its name from an Italian city, reflecting the cultural interests of its early owners. The building has long served as a gathering place for the community, with its decorated interiors and event spaces hosting important social occasions throughout the decades.
The building is located on North Higgins Avenue in downtown Missoula and is easily accessible and walkable. Modern restoration work has preserved the original lobby while adapting the space to house offices, shops, and event venues for contemporary use.
The building was among the first in the region to feature central air conditioning and glass shower doors, offering modern conveniences that travelers rarely encountered at the time. Hollywood actor John Wayne also stayed there, adding a touch of Western film glamour to the property.
