Republic, city in Ferry County, Washington, United States
Republic is a small city in Ferry County in the northeastern corner of Washington state, close to the Canadian border. It functions as the county seat and the main commercial stop for the rural communities spread across the surrounding mountains and forests.
The town grew up in the late 1800s as gold was discovered in the area and miners needed a place to resupply and settle. It was incorporated in 1900 and continued to serve as the main support point for the mining and farming communities that followed.
Republic serves as the social hub of Ferry County, where people from the surrounding valleys come to shop, handle errands, and attend local events. The main street is where most of daily life plays out, with a handful of shops and community gathering spots.
Because the next towns are a long drive away, it is worth stocking up on food, fuel, and supplies before leaving Republic. The city is also a good base for exploring the surrounding forests and back roads, especially for those coming from the west.
The hills around Republic have yielded some of the best-known Eocene plant fossils in North America, left behind when the area was covered by a warm forest around 50 million years ago. A local museum in town displays many of these finds and even lets visitors try their hand at splitting rocks to find fossils themselves.
