White Lake Grasslands Protected Area, Protected grassland area in Okanagan-Similkameen, Canada.
White Lake Grasslands Protected Area stretches from lake shore to mountain ridges across roughly 37 square kilometers. The land combines semi-arid grasslands, pine forests, and alkali ponds into distinct zones.
The protected area was established in 2001 following a comprehensive land and resource planning process for the region. This step secured protection for the Okanagan's distinctive ecosystems.
The land holds traces of First Nations settlement through rock shelters and pictographs scattered across the terrain. These marks connect visitors to the long human presence in this valley.
Access comes through Green Lake Road and Fairview-White Lake Road, with visitors relying on their own supplies. Bring plenty of water, as the protected area has minimal facilities.
The site shelters several endangered animal species of the region, including badgers and white-tailed jackrabbits found nowhere else nearby. Protecting these rare creatures was central to creating this protected area.
