Last Spike, Railway monument in Craigellachie, British Columbia, Canada
The Last Spike monument features stones from every Canadian province surrounding a commemorative spike located next to active railroad tracks.
On November 7, 1885, CPR director Donald Smith drove the final iron spike at this location, marking the completion of Canada's first transcontinental railway.
The photographs taken during the Last Spike ceremony became fundamental images in Canadian history, representing the connection between eastern and western territories.
The monument sits along the Trans-Canada Highway between Sicamous and Revelstoke, with dedicated parking facilities and informational plaques for visitors.
The original iron spike used in the ceremony disappeared after being removed to prevent souvenir hunting and reportedly became a carving knife handle in Winnipeg.
