Kikomun Creek Provincial Park, Provincial park in East Kootenay, Canada
Kikomun Creek Provincial Park spreads along Lake Koocanusa, featuring coniferous forests, open grasslands, and mountain ranges in the background. The site includes two developed beaches on Surveyors Lake and a boat launch on Lake Koocanusa for water activities.
The park was established in 1972 following the creation of Lake Koocanusa, which formed when Libby Dam was built in Montana. This dam project transformed the local landscape and made the area suitable for recreational development.
The park reflects Indigenous connections to the land through interpretive signs and educational programs visible throughout the site. Walking through, visitors encounter information about the original inhabitants and their relationship with these landscapes.
The park offers numerous campgrounds with varying facilities, and many sites can be reserved in advance. Plan visits during summer months when trails are accessible and weather is generally warm.
The park protects a noteworthy population of Western Painted Turtles, a rare species in this northern region. These turtles benefit from specific management efforts to maintain their numbers in the area.
