Sheep Mountain, Mountain summit in Gallatin Range, Montana, United States.
Sheep Mountain is a summit in the Gallatin Range of Montana reaching about 10,100 feet in elevation. Its slopes feed water into multiple river systems, including the Yellowstone River and Specimen Creek.
In 1913, surveyor T.M. Bannon used this mountain as a triangulation station to measure the surrounding geography. This early surveying work helped map out the Gallatin Range region for future reference.
The summit register, contained in a glass jar, holds signatures from mountaineers and explorers dating back through multiple decades since 1960.
Reaching the summit requires experienced hikers who can navigate steep terrain along the Sky Rim Trail and Gallatin Skyline Trail. Visitors should prepare for challenging conditions and have solid fitness levels before attempting this climb.
The north face holds sections of the Gallatin Petrified Forest with fossilized wood from the Eocene Epoch. These ancient tree remains offer visitors a glimpse into the flora that once grew in these mountains.
