CFB Calgary, Military base in Calgary, Canada
CFB Calgary was a military complex distributed across the city with barracks, training grounds, and administrative buildings supporting Army, Navy, and Air Force operations. The installation contained multiple interconnected facilities where daily operations and training took place.
The installation began in 1910 as Sarcee Camp on land leased from Tsuu T'ina First Nation and expanded during World War I to train the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After a century of military use, the base closed in 1997.
The former military installation shaped how locals viewed defense and community service through decades of presence in the city. Service members integrated into neighborhoods, influencing local traditions and shared civic identity.
The site is no longer accessible as a military base since it converted to commercial use after closing in 1997. Visitors can explore the area and see how former military grounds now host businesses and gaming venues.
The complex combined three separate military installations known as Sarcee Camp, Harvey Barracks, and Currie Barracks scattered across the district. Today the Grey Eagle Casino sits on the former Harvey Barracks site, making it the visible remnant of this military past.
