Atlas Coal Mine, National historic coal mine site in Drumheller, Canada.
The Atlas Coal Mine is a historic site in Drumheller preserving one of North America's last wooden coal tipples, standing over seven stories high above the valley. The complex includes multiple original buildings and distinct areas that together show how the operation functioned.
The mine began operating in 1936, supplying coal to steam locomotives of Canadian National and Pacific Railways across western Canada. It remained active until 1979 when operations ceased.
The site preserves original buildings from the 1930s including the wash house, supply house, and office, showing how miners lived and worked daily. These structures reveal the rhythm of operations through their layout and equipment.
The site offers different ways to explore: a train ride, a tour of the processing plant, or a walk to the mine entrance. Weather in the region can change quickly, so visitors should prepare for variable conditions.
The site honors 13 miners who lost their lives on the grounds, including four workers killed in a gas explosion in 1941. This tragic history remains part of the place's memory.
