Torrington Gopher Hole Museum

The Torrington Gopher Hole Museum displays 77 mounted Richardson ground squirrels arranged within 44 detailed dioramas. Each scene brings a different aspect of local life to view, with the animals positioned in human situations and environments.

This museum came about in the 1990s after local grain elevators closed and the community looked for ways to draw visitors. Its creation marked a turning point for Torrington as the town sought to reinvent itself through creative means.

The displays portray small-town Canadian life through mounted rodents dressed as police officers, farmers, beauticians, priests, and bank robbers. These scenes reflect the everyday professions and activities that shape community life in rural Alberta.

The museum operates on a donation basis and has a gift shop featuring gopher-themed merchandise. Visitors should check ahead since opening hours can vary with the season, so planning your visit in advance is helpful.

A giant mounted ground squirrel sits proudly on a throne near the main display area. This oversized specimen is one of the most photographed objects in the building and serves as a beloved landmark for visitors.
