Bozeman Brewery Historic District, historic district in Montana, United States
The Bozeman Brewery Historic District is a collection of five historic buildings on North Wallace Avenue that includes a large brick brewery from 1895, a Queen Anne mansion, and several residences. The structures display architectural styles such as Queen Anne and bungalow and span approximately six acres.
Julius Lehrkind took over an existing brewery in Bozeman in 1895 and renamed it Bozeman Brewery after previously living in Iowa and Pennsylvania with brewing experience. During Prohibition from 1919 to 1932, the family stopped beer production and instead operated an ice and coal business, until they briefly made a beer called Old Faithful.
The Lehrkind Mansion displays Queen Anne style with a tower, large windows, and gables that reflected the family's prosperity from brewing. Multiple family homes clustered near the brewery demonstrate how work and living spaces were closely intertwined in this community.
The area on North Wallace Avenue is easily walkable, allowing visitors to stroll past the historic structures and view the architecture from the turn of the 19th century. Most of the buildings cluster closely together, making it possible to explore the site during a short walk.
Lehrkind obtained a Coca-Cola franchise in 1914 and built a bottling plant for soft drinks while the original brewery continued to operate alongside it. This side business in soft drinks and the bottling facility constructed in 1925 demonstrate how the family diversified to adapt to legal constraints.
