Skypoint, Public structure at Broadway intersection in Billings, Montana.
Skypoint is a public structure at a Broadway intersection in Billings featuring five large white sails suspended overhead. The central sail remains fixed while four movable segments form the canopy.
The structure was originally called Beaconing Rim before being renamed through a design competition. Mayor Chuck Tooley dedicated it as Skypoint on May 31, 2002.
The intersection beneath this structure serves as the main meeting place for the city's events, particularly the Yellowstone Valley Farmers Market and Strawberry Festival. These gatherings remain central to how the community comes together.
The structure reaches about 73 feet (22 meters) at its highest point, with two shorter support columns of about 28 feet (8 meters). The location is easily accessible on foot and offers free public access.
The four smaller sails move along tracks to shift the canopy configuration based on weather patterns. This mechanical feature lets the structure adapt to changing conditions throughout the seasons.
