Sturgis, Motorcycle rally destination in South Dakota, US
Sturgis is a city in Meade County in western South Dakota, surrounded by the rolling hills and pine forests of the Black Hills. The town sits at roughly 3400 feet (1040 meters) elevation and serves as the county seat.
The settlement was established in 1878 as a supply point for Fort Meade and named after Civil War general Samuel D. Sturgis. The annual motorcycle event began in the 1930s as a small race and grew over decades into one of the largest gatherings of its kind.
The local museum houses historic motorcycles and memorabilia spanning more than a century of two-wheel history. Visitors can view displays about the evolution of motorcycle culture and the local significance of the annual gathering.
The town offers several lodging options and campgrounds that become heavily occupied during the annual motorcycle rally in August. Visitors arriving outside the main event will find quieter conditions and easier access to local attractions.
The local saloon was rebuilt after a fire and now covers a large site with multiple stages and entertainment areas. A zipline crosses the property and gives patrons a fast route between different sections.
