Too Close For Comfort Site, Archaeological buffalo jump site in Havre, Montana, United States
The Wahkpa Chu'gn site is an archaeological location along the Milk River where cliffs served as a hunting ground. Remains there show how hunters drove bison herds over the edge in an organized manner and then processed the meat at the cliff base.
The area was inhabited between 2000 and 600 years ago by three different groups: the Besent, Avonlea, and Saddle Butte peoples. These cultures hunted here together to gather large amounts of meat and hides for their communities.
Native Americans created extensive drive lanes marked with rock cairns stretching several miles to guide bison herds toward the precipice for communal hunting.
The grounds are managed by a museum that provides visitors access to excavation areas and information about prehistoric hunting methods. The location sits near Havre and is open to the public throughout the year.
The museum offers visitors hands-on archaeological activities and experiences that show how scientists research the prehistoric past. These interactive opportunities allow people to better understand the craftsmanship and techniques of the original inhabitants.
