Alaskan Hotel and Bar
Alaskan Hotel and Bar, Historic hotel in Downtown Historic District, Juneau, United States.
The Alaskan Hotel and Bar is a three-story Victorian structure on South Franklin Street featuring wood floors, tall ceilings, and stained glass windows that run throughout its 42 guest rooms. The building offers both standard accommodations with shared or private bathrooms and five suites equipped with kitchenettes, each with its own character and layout.
Three miners who struck gold in the Coast Range established this place in 1913, making it the oldest continuously operating hotel in the city. Its founding coincided with Alaska's gold mining expansion, when lodgings like this became essential gathering spots for transient workers and local residents alike.
The building reflects the style and spirit of the early 1900s gold mining era through its retained woodwork and design choices that shaped this part of town.
The property sits in the heart of the historic downtown area and is easily walkable to shops and restaurants nearby. Visitors should know that the age of the structure means narrower hallways and limited elevator availability, so it helps to keep this in mind when planning your stay.
The original owners released the hotel keys attached to a helium balloon to symbolize their pledge that the establishment would never shut down. This unusual gesture remains part of local lore and speaks to the founders' pride in what they built.
