Universiade Pavilion, Sports complex at University of Alberta, Canada
The Universiade Pavilion is a sports building at the University of Alberta with a 200-meter track, multiple courts, and dedicated spaces for long jump and pole vault. Its large interior spans approximately 64,000 square feet and can be configured for different types of events.
This facility was built in 1983 to enable the University of Alberta to host the Summer Universiade games. The construction marked a major investment in the campus sports infrastructure at that time.
The yellow exterior and dome shape led students and staff to call it Butterdome, a nickname the university now uses officially. This informal name has become part of how people recognize and describe the building.
Seating for about 5,500 spectators is available with two-level bleachers, and the lower sections can be adjusted for different events. This flexible arrangement works for sports competitions and other large gatherings.
The interior is large enough to fit a semi-truck, which opens it up to hosting all kinds of events beyond traditional sports. This unusual capacity has led to creative uses of the space over the years.
