Alberta Central Railway Museum, Railway museum in Wetaskiwin, Canada
The Alberta Central Railway Museum in Wetaskiwin is a collection of railway equipment, historic locomotives, and passenger cars from the Canadian Pacific Railway era. The site features a complete mile-long track loop where visitors can take actual train rides.
The museum grew around one of Alberta's oldest remaining grain elevators, showing how railways were vital to farming around 1900. This connection between trains and grain trade shaped how the region developed.
The restored Mount Avalanche sleeper car from 1926 shows how travelers lived and slept during early 20th century rail journeys. Visitors can sit inside this carriage today and experience how people traveled back then.
The museum is open only on summer weekends from May to September and will reopen in May 2025 after renovations. Visitors should check the weather and be prepared for outdoor terrain, as the site is entirely outdoors.
Train rides follow a complete loop of about a mile, bringing visitors to different parts of the collection. This full circuit means each ride explores the whole site rather than just moving between two points.
