West Edmonton Mall, Shopping center in Edmonton, Canada.

The retail complex extends across 490,000 square meters (5,273,000 square feet) and houses more than 800 stores, service providers, and entertainment facilities distributed across multiple floors with indoor and outdoor sections.

The Ghermezian family opened the retail center in September 1981 and expanded the property through four construction phases until 1999, progressively adding entertainment zones and additional retail areas.

The complex serves as a social meeting point for local residents and visitors who combine leisure activities with retail experiences and spend several hours regardless of outdoor weather conditions.

The property offers 32,000 parking spaces, opens daily from 10 AM to 9 PM, and provides digital navigation tools while public transportation serves multiple stops near the building.

The complex houses Galaxyland, Canada's first Hasbro theme park, plus World Waterpark featuring an indoor surf facility and a wave pool capable of generating swells up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) high.

The world's largest shopping malls to absolutely explore

The world's major shopping malls have become much more than just places to shop. People spend the day there, sometimes even the evening, between restaurants, attractions, and relaxation zones. Some host adventure parks, others museums, an ice rink, or a ski slope in a desert climate. Each complex tells something about its era and city. In Dubai, galleries compete with futuristic architecture. In Bangkok, centers combine luxury, cuisine, and entertainment. In North America, the spaces are so large they resemble full little cities with internal streets and themed zones. From continent to continent, these sites attract millions of visitors seeking new experiences. This selection brings together the most impressive centers, offering total immersion through large-scale shopping, varied entertainment, and ever-evolving scenery.
