RCAF Station Saskatoon, Military aviation base in Saskatoon, Canada
RCAF Station Saskatoon was a Canadian military air base featuring six runways, multiple hangars, training facilities, and administrative buildings spread across its operational grounds. The infrastructure was designed to support both flight operations and the training of air crews.
The station was established in September 1940 as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan and served to train air crews during the Second World War. The installation remained operational until 1945 and played a key role in wartime preparation.
The air base included a school serving the children of military families and an adjacent residential neighborhood, reflecting the self-contained community built around the installation. These facilities show how military bases supported families and created their own social spaces.
The former base is now part of Saskatoon's international airport and several original structures remain visible. Visitors can explore the area in connection with airport activities, where some original military buildings can be seen.
After the war, the site was used between 1964 and 1978 as a storage facility for retired military aircraft before being integrated into the airport. This second phase shows how military installations were repurposed after their original mission ended.
