Bethany, city in Oklahoma, United States
Bethany is a small city in Oklahoma County, located about ten miles west of Oklahoma City. The streets are laid out in a calm, orderly way with single-family homes surrounded by yards and trees, interspersed with parks and green spaces that give the place a relaxed, spread-out feeling.
Bethany was founded in 1909 by members of the Church of the Nazarene seeking a place to practice their faith freely. A major tornado struck in 1930 and destroyed much of the town, but residents rebuilt, and the city grew again during World War II as workers moved to be near Oklahoma City's industries.
Bethany was founded by the Church of the Nazarene and carries this religious heritage in its name and community values. Local residents gather throughout the year for festivals, holiday celebrations, and street events that reflect how faith and neighborly connection remain central to daily life.
The city is easy to reach by car along main roads, especially via the historic Route 66 corridor that runs through downtown. Parking is straightforward and streets are clearly marked, making it simple to explore neighborhoods and commercial areas on foot or by car.
For much of its history, Bethany had unusually strict rules that banned alcohol, tobacco, gambling, dancing, and movies, making it an exceptionally quiet community. These restrictions gradually eased over time as the city evolved and took on a more relaxed character.
