Davenport Murchison National Park, Protected wilderness area in Northern Territory, Australia.

Davenport Murchison National Park is a protected conservation area in Northern Territory, Australia, featuring mountain ranges, wide open plains, and rivers that flow mainly during the wet season. The landscape varies across different elevations and supports diverse native wildlife adapted to the harsh outback environment.

The land became an official national park in 1993 when the Northern Territory government formally protected this region to safeguard its varied ecosystems and native habitats. This designation was part of a wider effort to preserve Australia's fragile outback environments.

The dual name Iytwelepenty comes from Indigenous language and reflects how local communities have connected with this land across many generations. Walking through the park today, you can see evidence of these lasting ties in the way water sources and natural features shape daily movement through the landscape.

The park is extremely remote with limited facilities nearby, so visitors should bring plenty of water, food, and fuel before arriving. Access is mainly via Stuart Highway, and using a sturdy vehicle is recommended along with checking local conditions before you set out.

The McArthur River runs through the park and serves as a critical water source in this otherwise dry region, especially during the dry season. Wildlife relies on this flowing water to survive, making it a lifeline for many animal species throughout the year.
