Great Ocean Walk, Coastal hiking trail in Victoria, Australia.
Great Ocean Walk is a hiking trail along the southwestern coast of Victoria that passes through rainforests, limestone cliffs, and sandy beaches. The path connects Apollo Bay with the dramatic rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles, covering diverse coastal terrain.
The government of Victoria established this route in 2006 to connect Apollo Bay with the limestone rock formations. The pathway follows routes that have been used through the region for a long time.
The path follows traditional Aboriginal routes through the region, containing numerous archaeological sites of indigenous significance along the Southern Ocean.
The route has seven designated camping areas with basic facilities that require advance booking. Visitors should bring proper equipment and be prepared for changing weather and uneven terrain.
Hikers encounter many native species across about 30 different ecosystems, from koalas in eucalyptus trees to migrating whales in the waters. This variety makes each section of the walk a different nature experience.
