HM Glendairy Prison, Colonial prison in Station Hill, Barbados
The prison facility spans multiple buildings with cell blocks designed to accommodate up to 1,000 male and female inmates within its perimeter walls.
Constructed in 1855, HM Glendairy Prison operated for 150 years until a major uprising in March 2005 led to its destruction by fire.
The prison buildings represent British colonial architecture and contain tangible evidence of Caribbean penal system development during the nineteenth century.
Following the 2005 incident, prison operations transferred to a new facility called HMP Dodds, located in St Philip district of Barbados.
The former naval base turned prison site contains archaeological remains that document the evolution of incarceration practices in the Caribbean region.
