Needham's Point Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse in Saint Michael, Barbados
Needham's Point Lighthouse is an octagonal stone tower with white walls and a black lantern room, positioned at the southern edge of Carlisle Bay. It stands roughly 13 meters high and uses a simple design typical of 19th century beacon structures.
The tower was constructed in 1855 and functioned for many years as a navigation aid for ships entering southwestern waters. It was one of several beacons built along the coast to help mariners reach safety during their journeys.
This lighthouse carries a maritime story that shaped how Barbados connected with the sea and trade for many years. The white tower and black lantern are visible reminders of how people here depended on seafaring to survive and build their lives.
The lighthouse can be viewed from the outside at Pebbles Beach, which sits near the Hilton Barbados Resort area. The interior is closed to visitors, but the exterior structure is clearly visible from the beach side.
The beacon uses a half-red and half-green lens design that helped ship captains determine which side they were approaching the bay from. This two-color system was an ingenious solution for safely guiding vessels through busy waters.
