Praia da Galheta, Naturist beach in Florianópolis, Brazil.
Praia da Galheta is a naturist beach in Florianópolis, tucked between two better-known bays on Santa Catarina island and reachable only on foot. Behind the strip of fine sand, steep hills covered in Atlantic Forest vegetation rise sharply, sheltering the shore from surrounding areas.
The beach stayed untouched for decades because it could only be reached by walking trails while the rest of Santa Catarina island developed around it. It was officially recognized as a naturist beach in the 1980s, which helped formalize its use and shield it from further development.
Praia da Galheta is one of the few officially designated naturist beaches in Brazil, yet clothed visitors are equally welcome. Both groups share the sand without visible tension, making the experience feel open and relaxed.
There are no shops or bathrooms at the beach, so visitors should bring water and food for the day. The access trail from the neighboring beaches takes around 15 to 20 minutes to walk and can be slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
Wild orchids grow along the hillsides behind the beach, visible to anyone walking down the access trail. They thrive there because the slope has never been cleared, leaving the original forest largely intact.
