Mont Nabemba, Mountain summit in Souanké, Republic of the Congo.

Mont Nabemba is the highest summit in the Republic of the Congo, rising to about 1,020 metres in the Sangha Department, roughly fifty kilometres from Souanké. Its broad slope is covered in continuous grass and trees, with no bare rock at the top. Partway up the left flank stand several buildings with tan thatched roofs, among them a long rectangular lodge with a light-coloured wall base and dark openings, a round hut with a conical thatched roof behind it, and a low stone retaining wall below the lodge.

Mont Nabemba's elevation of about 1,020 metres, the highest point in the Republic of the Congo, has long made it a fixed reference in the sparsely populated northwest of the country, roughly fifty kilometres from Souanké in Sangha Department. Iron ore deposits lie in its vicinity, and Sundance Resources has carried out drilling in preparation for mining the mountain.

Nabemba Tower, a 30-storey office block in Brazzaville, takes its name from the mountain; the building was long the tallest in the city. The summit itself lies in a thinly populated part of Sangha Department, about 50 km from Souanké, so it has no local ritual or festival attached to it in the sources.

Mont Nabemba lies about fifty kilometres from Souanké, in a sparsely populated part of the Sangha Department, so the approach is overland and there is no marked trail to the summit. The photograph shows thatched-roof buildings and a low stone retaining wall partway up the slope, the only structures in view. Iron-ore drilling has been carried out in the vicinity, so expect tracks and cleared ground rather than untouched forest.

Nabemba Tower in Brazzaville, the city's tallest building, is named after this mountain, carrying the summit's name into the capital. The mountain's iron ore deposits have drawn the Australian company Sundance Resources, which has been drilling in preparation to mine the mountain itself.
